Rachel, it looks like it was a temple sealing, which is where a couple can be married in the temple not just for earth life but for eternity (it’s done through the priesthood keys/authority mentioned in Matthew 16:19). It also means that the children can be “sealed” to the parents, so that the family will be a family for all eternity, even in the life after this. A covenant is a two-way promise—one way is what we promise to God, and the other way is what God promises to us for obedience to the promises we make to Him. So in this case, the covenant allows the family to be together for eternity.
