Someday

My Quincey Rose. Photo By Jefra Starr Linn
Yesterday I visited with a sweet friend of mine who recently lost someone very close to her. As soon as I saw her we embraced and cried. Her sad eyes linger in my head and I wish I could take all the pain away from her. Pain of losing someone... it hurts so bad. I wish I could tell her that it's okay, or it'll get easier but I can't. The only thing I can tell her--she already knows. That she'll see him again.
Life is so fragile.
Spent the afternoon following my busy Avery around. Didn't let myself get distracted by anything and just ran around the back yard doing whatever her curious mind wanted to do. We made mud pies, inspected all sorts of leaves, smelled dozens of flowers & picked each petal from a rose. At one point, while she chased a white butterfly across the grass, I got choked up. (Surprise, surprise since I'm doing that lots lately ;) I was just so moved watching her eyes beam as she followed it & laughed each time she tried to grab it.
The next thing I know, she's in tears because it flew away. You know, those big crocodile tears girls can dish up so well. The tears that cause me to dig deep into my mommy skills to find the remedy. And all because she wanted to hold it.
"The butterfly will come back someday." I told her. Just like I told my friend... you'll see him again. And she will.
Remember when I was bragging about Jefra and the brilliant photos she takes? These are a couple photos she snapped of my beauties while we were setting up the photo shoot. Thanks Jefra! Love them. Love.

well! it is hard indeed to find the words to tell our babies what the world is really about, when we find it difficult to cope with it ourselves. But you are right: in a mummy's heart there is always enough love to help us find the right words ! you are a great mum and your girls (even the one to come !) are blessed to have you!
hope you are ok.
hugs from France!!

This is a great post. Touches on all the important things in life! And I totally relate to little girls crying about not being able to hold & touch butterflies. My 4 year old is obsessive about it and does the same thing. I wish things were so simple throughout life.

What a beautiful post Liz!
It is so hard to know what to say in those very emotional and grief filled moments and what you did and said was sure to comfort your friend. HUGS!

Love how you described being with Avery in the yard. I spend many moments like that with my 5 yr old daughter in our yard and sometimes forget to just enjoy it. Thanks for the reminder. :)

The photos are magical. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful post, beautiful words. My 28-yr-old cousin passed away suddenly a few weeks ago...after the funeral...just 3 days later...a butterfly came onto our deck, sat there and then walked around for about 5 minutes by the patio door. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE! I looked at it and couldn't help but ask, "Jason? Is that you?" My girls were so happy...to me it meant something else. I took photos of this butterfly, showed my husband when he got home from work, and the first thing he said was, "Wow, is that Jason?" I burst out crying. I still hurts so bad...I can't get rid of this pit in my chest. I know it will take time...I miss him so much. It hurts to lose someone you love so much. But when I see the butterflies, I know he is sending his love. I send much love and hugs to your friend. It means even more to me now to be doing this Butterfly-themed Baby Shower for my baby sis...she was so close to him. Thanks again for the post...it means more than you know. God bless you and your family!

Your words brought me to tears, yes life is precious and fleeting, and our adorable children are what make it worthwhile, isn't that why we scrapbook, to make those fleeting moments last. And your friend is a true talent with photography, love the light shining on Quincey, she looks like and angel, and Avery is a little doll.

What a sweet post. Sometimes, it takes losing someone to realize how fragile life really is and how blessed we are to have those "butterfly" moments! Your daughters are so cute!

What beautiful photos and sentiments, you need to do a scrap page on the butterfly moment-so special. I am sorry to hear of your friends loss...It is never easy. I lost my brother only last year suddenly and the pain never goes away...sure you learn to laugh and smile again and you can talk about them and smile...but underneath it all, it still hurts and there will always be that little hole where they once filled it...

Thank you so much for your blog! It really helped at a time where right now my Grandma is my best friend is in the hospital and growing older. I'm 23 and have been blessed not to experience many deaths, so this is hard. Your blog and thoughts were so nice to read because I have been trying to convince myself of what you are saying. Thank you dear!
